In accordance with the Constitution of Turkmenistan, the powers of the President of the country should have left for the chairman of the Majlis parliament, and he had no right to participate in new elections, which were supposed to take place no later than two months later. However, the Chairman of the Avezhegeldy Parliament was to be detained, and the acting president of the Security Council of Turkmenistan appointed Berdimuhamedov, who was also appointed head of the Niyazov funeral commission.
